“How many hours of wedding photography do we actually need?”
And honestly, it’s a great question. Your coverage determines what moments are captured, how relaxed your timeline feels, and how complete your gallery is at the end of the day.
I’ve been photographing weddings for 9 years, shooting 30–40 weddings a year and over 250 celebrations so far. I’ve seen every timeline imaginable, and the biggest difference between a smooth day and a stressful one usually comes down to coverage time.
Let’s break it down in a simple, realistic way so you can choose what fits your wedding best.
Understanding Wedding Photography Coverage
(6, 8 & 10 Hours)
6 Hours of Coverage - “The Essential”
Best for: Intimate weddings, shorter timelines, or couples skipping getting-ready photos or less reception photos.
With 6 hours, we focus on the core moments:
Ceremony
Formal family photos
Couple portraits
Getting ready highlights Or Reception highlights
This option works best when everything is happening in one location and the day is streamlined.
8 Hours of Coverage - “The Traditional”
Best for: Most full wedding days.
Eight hours allows for a more complete story:
Details and getting ready
Ceremony
Family and wedding party photos
Golden hour portraits
Reception events
This is my most popular coverage length, especially for couples who want breathing room in their timeline without feeling rushed.
8 Hours with Two Shooters - “The Keepsake”
Best for: Larger guest counts or overlapping moments.
Adding a second photographer means:
Both partners get an equal amount of getting ready moments
More candid moments during cocktail hour
Multiple angles during the ceremony
Stronger reception coverage
For weddings with 100+ guests, I highly recommend two shooters to ensure nothing is missed.
10 Hours with Two Shooters - “The Heirloom”
Best for: Full-day coverage from start to finish.
Ten hours allows us to document:
Morning details and prep
First looks or private vows or multiple first looks
Ceremony and portraits
Sunset photos
Full reception and formal exit
This option is perfect if you want a complete, start-to-finish wedding story with zero rush.

Here’s an example of how an 8-hour day can flow smoothly:
2:00 PM – Photographer arrives
2:00–2:30 – Detail photos (dress, rings, flat lay, florals, venue)
2:30–3:00 – Hair & makeup finishing touches / Groom/Groomsmen getting dressed
3:00–3:30 – Groomsmen photos
3:30–4:00 – Robe photos & getting into the dress
4:00–4:30 – Bridal party + bridal portraits
4:30–5:00 – First look & full wedding party or first touch & private vows
5:00–5:30 – Hide bride + ceremony/reception photos
5:30–6:00 – Ceremony
6:00–6:30 – Family photos

This timeline gives space for real moments without feeling rushed, and still captures golden hour beautifully.
Texas Light & Sunset Timing (This Matters)
Texas sunsets change dramatically depending on the season.
Spring & Summer: later sunsets = longer portrait windows
Fall & Winter: earlier sunsets = tighter timelines
More coverage means:
Better lighting
Less stress
More creative flexibility

I recommend adding a second photographer if:

Your ceremony and reception overlap moments
Two shooters allow your story to be told more fully and naturally.
